Thread: Runebound (second edition):: General:: Looking for advice on the Character Decks, for a solo gamer wanting more character customisation
by hildan
I have recently started playing Runebound again, I had forgotten how much I actually liked it.Something which appealed to me the most is the very (very) light RPG element which can be played solo (every game is.) the only thing I have found myself wishing for more is the chance to customise the way in which my character levels up.
I have been looking at the various character class decks and they seem to be mixed of allowing you to learn skills / feats / abilities when you level up? BUT as I don’t play with anyone (smallest violin I know) how useful would these character decks be? I don’t really want cards which will just give me abilities to attack the non existent other players.

Thread: Runebound (second edition):: General:: Idea for a different way to do solo play
by peterk1
Hi Everyone,I just treated myself to Runebound yesterday due to a lot of the comments that I've read on here. My initial purchases were a little strange - I got the base game in English but 3 of the extension decks in French since my neighborhood store was all out of (or they never ordered) the English versions. Ha! Anyone who plays with me will have to bilingual I guess.
I bought this game mainly for the solo play, however and I'm at the tail end of my first game. Lots of fun. Has a nice D&D flavor. The fights are fun but it never gets bogged down in minutae.
I'm familiar with the solitaire method that most people use (the doom track) but I decided to try something else to see how it would work. I often use this tactic when playing games solitaire to quickly get some "AI controlled" personalities happening that won't take too much thought and dice-rolling to implement.
I'm playing with my own hero, but there are two other heroes controlled by the "system". One of the AI heroes is always assumed to roll 12 whenever he rolls the dice, the other will always roll 10. You can change these numbers as desired to scale the difficulty of your game up and down.
For movement, the AI heroes don't use the terrain dice, they just pick their destination (either closest adventure counter for their level; or closest town if they're more than 50% injured; or specific town if there is an Event or special task in play) and go there based on terrain costs (3 for swamp, river, mountain; 2 for forest and hills; 1 for everything else). Speeds AI movement up immensely.
For combat they always attack in the phase with the greatest to hit probability. They always use combat related cards at first opportunity. Since you know what they will roll, you can almost always figure out the end result after just doing one phase and it's very quick to resolve.
When AI heroes level up - I pick an experience counter at random out of a cup.
It's working quite well and seems to be having the desired effect. Managing the AI controlled players is pretty quick due to the special rules. Instead of the doom track pushing the game forward, things get propelled forward by the AI heroes wandering around doing adventures and you don't have to lose/redefine any of the cards and rules related to PvP which do add a certain fun element to the game.

Thread: Runebound (second edition):: General:: Which Expansion for Better Market Deck?

I was wondering if someone could list the expansions that offer the most new stuff for the Market Deck. It would be the best if the suggested expansions were focused on the Market Deck, if at all possible. Thanks for your time!

Thread: Runebound (second edition):: General:: All's quiet on the the Runebound front.......why?
by ChakaDon
Runebound was the game that got me interested in boardgaming again and seven years later, RB remains one of my favorite games amongst all of the other purchases that I have made since. So naturally, I visit FFG's website from time to time hoping to see what's next for RB, but for a good long time now there hasn't been anything new. The only information that I could find on my own in regards to RB's overall status were unconfirmed statements that it was either going OOP or that a third-edition was currently in production.
I was just wondering if anyone here could maybe provide some "official" information on RB's status?
Thanks

Thread: Runebound (second edition):: General:: If I like Mage Knight, will I like Runebound
by mauer
Currently, I spent a lot of time playing solo games of Mage Knight. As both games seem to share quite a bit, I was wondering if I should by Runebound to have some alternative to Mage Knight. How does it play as a solo game? Most reviews only cover the two or more player game. Unfortunately, my wife isn't very much into fantasy games :-(

Thread: Runebound (second edition):: General:: Looking for Ranged Weapons?
by rewslaun
Greetings,I'll start off by saying that I own the Island of Dread, Sands of Al-Kalim and the first 6 expansion packs that FFG came out with. I went through my entire market deck and I could only find 4 ranged weapon cards. Considering how many melee and magic weapons there are I was very surprised. Are there any other expansions that add new ranged weapons? I played a ranged player in my last game and it was very frustrating that I couldn't locate a bow but I drew about 10 melee weapons and 4 magic ones. Any help you can give on what expansions might have more ranged weapons is greatly appreciated.

Thread: Runebound (second edition):: General:: Relative rank of Runebound and Mage Knight?
by MVives
Setting aside the merits of relying on BGG rank, and the fact that these aren't the same game...Like many others, I have been comparing Mage Knight and Runebound as two choices for a good fantasy adventure game, with options for solitaire and competitive play (and maybe some co-op?). Both games are enjoyed by many people. However, I am surprised by the relative values of their BGG ranks: Runebound is #327 and Mage Knight is #11.
Is Mage Knight actually that much "better" overall? (for some definition of better) Has Runebound been out too long that gamers aren't as enamored with it? Reading and watching videos about Mage Knight, it actually seems uncomfortably complicated and fiddly, so I would have at least expected a closer rank. For what it's worth, I am leaning toward Runebound + Sands.
So any reasonable explanations for the disparity? Perhaps I missed something obvious. Thanks for any insights!

Thread: Runebound (second edition):: General:: A little disappointed at unavailable decks
by cody_au
Just getting into this game, it's a little disappointing that so many of the decks now appear to be out of print and unavailable. I put together a little spreadsheet of what I haven't been able to find:Runebound: Artifacts and Allies
Runebound: Champions of Kellos
Runebound: Relics of Legend
Runebound: Weapons of Legend
Runebound: Drakes and Dragonspawn
Runebound: Shadows of Margath (Second Edition)
Runebound: The Dark Forest
Runebound: The Terrors of the Tomb
Runebound: Crown of the Elder Kings
Runebound: The Scepter of Kyros
Runebound: Battlemage Character Deck
And also
Runebound: The Island of Dread
Runebound: Midnight (naturally, heard it sold poorly)
If someone is at games con, I'd love them to twist the CEO's ear and ask what the deal is. Is the game dead, are they preparing to reboot it, or what?

Thread: Runebound (second edition):: General:: Two newbs get frustrated
by jsteinfo
Embarrassingly, I've had Runebound sitting in the back of my closet for years. I finally found the opportunity to get it to the table for a 2-player session, but the experience was less than stellar.I've read through the rules a couple of times and we repeatedly consulted them during gameplay. We are wondering if we missed something obvious about the rules...
We ended up playing the game for close to FOUR HOURS without getting to where we could take on the blues. Yellow was still knocking us out over and over again. The game was fun but it started to feel like it should be done and became a bit frustrating.
My character was Mad Carthos (0/1,3/1,4/2) and my friend had Silhouette (2/2,3/1,1/1). It seemed like we were getting knocked out way more often that we should have. It is hard to get new weapons and allies when we keep losing all of our gold. I joked at one point that I wasn't sure what the rules said about running out of undefeated slots. :-)
After we finally called it quits, I went though and examined the Market deck and found that there was only one ranged weapon that could be used to increase our damage. I also looked at the blue and red decks and found very tough stuff that did lots of damage.
How on earth are we supposed to be able to survive more than a couple rounds against these things? The most damage that it appears that we can do to the monsters is 2 without a weapon and 3 with a weapon.
Are we missing some way to do more damage? At what level should we be able to start taking on what colors typically? Is it not about dealing damage but rather surviving attacks? Maybe we just were getting lousy rolls all night, but that seems statistically unlikely given that we played for almost four hours.
I feel like a doofus because I see play accounts here that describe finishing in 3 hours or similar. We've got to be doing something wrong. We just don't know what to adjust in our gameplay. So many people like this game and I don't see a bunch of people talking about how difficult it is.

Thread: Runebound (second edition):: General:: Why does Runebound 2nd Edition take longer than 1st edition?
by downstream
I've read the rules for 2nd edition and I'm planning to play it soon, but I am hoping for the game to not drag too long, so I'm trying to decide which of the variant rules I'll try. The 2 main ones I'm considering are some kind of doom/threat track, and changing experience costs to equal the level you are buying (1, 2, 3, etc). I don't want to try any of the more elaborate variants.I've read a few posts were folks say that Runebound 1st edition played more quickly, but they didn't explain which rule changes in 2nd edition were responsible for this. With so many variants floating around, it's hard to sort out what rules changed when.
To summarize, my 3 main questions are:
1. How did the experience point costs and the end game work in 1st edition?
2. What changes did they make in 2nd edition that cause some players to say that it takes longer?
3. What experience point cost and end game condition would you recommend?

Hey Everyone,Due to financial and time reasons (I need money to pay bills and don't have time to play this awesome game), I'm auctioning off my entire Runebound collection.
I love Runebound, but sometimes you have to let it go to someone who can love it more.
The auction has no reserves, but pretty steep "but it now" rules.
It ends sometime next Saturday (the 27th of October).

Thread: Runebound (second edition):: General:: Which 2 big box exp to get...?
by Armatige
Well as the title states, which two big box expansions should I get. Please do not include Islands or Midnight since I am unable to get those.
So it comes down to Sands, Frozen and Mists.
Also, I would be using the solo variant for these half the time. The other half will be with one or two other players.
Thanks folks.

Thread: Runebound (second edition):: General:: Runebound vs. Runewars

I have heard of both Runebound and Runewars. I've read up a bit on both games but it is not clear to me what the difference is between the two. Obviously, it's two different games with two different sets of rules. But, they seem to me like two variations of the same kind of game. What am I not understanding about the difference between the two games?

Playing Runebound with my boys and having a blast, the game stays out all week.As a wizard I was waiting for a decent magician's staff to show up in the market deck to give me some damage bonuses, until I went through & checked & there isn't any.
There are plenty of swords, hammers etc, so what's the deal ? Maybe in an expansion ?
Thanks all.

Thread: Runebound (second edition):: General:: Runebound dice still at FFG Event Center
Even though the FFG Holiday Sale site says that these are sold out, if you're in the Twin Cities there's still a plastic tub at the FFG Event Center (as of today) with around 30 or so of these dice for the sale price of $1.00. Get 'em now if you want a second or third set, as I'm guessing once these are gone there won't be any more printed.
